I have been an Accredited Member (AM) of the International Society of Appraisers (ISA) since 1996. ISA requires compliance with their Report Writing Standards, Code of Ethics and the Uniform Standard Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice. (USPAP )
I was the first personal property appraiser in the USA certified by the AQB of the The Appraisal Foundation (TAF), which was established by Congress, to teach USPAP to personal property appraisers. It is my bible that guides me through the appraisal process in every appraisal assignment.
My object knowledge is the result of extensive experience and study and 40+ years of active involvement in local and online auctions and estate sales in San Gabriel and Los Angeles.
I opened a 21,000 sq. ft. antique store in Glendale California in 1979. Eight years later I moved across the alley to an 8,000 sq. ft. general antiques and rare records store. In the early 1990’s I moved to a store on Melrose in West Hollywood. Later I bought and operated Novotny's Antique Gallery Mall on Lake Ave in Pasadena. I retired from the antique business in 1999. Since the mid 1990's I have been a general residential contents appraiser.
In the 80's and 90's I had spaces at several major Los Angeles antique malls and I exhibited at many California antique shows. I did the monthly Rose Bowl Swap Meet.
I know my limits. I will appraise your residential contentss, onsite or online, formally or when appropriate orally, and always with research as needed. I will solve your valuation needs meaningfully or I will decline the appraisal assignment.
I have 40+ years of full time market experience in all market levels including over 20 years as an antiques dealer, approximately 30 years as an estate sale agent and nearly 30 years as an antiques appraiser and personal property appraiser.
There is a nearly infinite variety of movable objects made from all types of materials, from throughout time and from all parts of the world. Each object type has unique relevant characteristics important in the marketplace which vary and differ by utility or relevance to market indicators. As a consequence a generalist appraiser can expect to encounter anything and be expected to appraise everything as a general residential contents appraiser
I decline to appraise any object for which I cannot develop a credible value opinion following brief by diligent research.
I challenge myself to find and identify potentially significant objects of value. I appraise common/ordinary objects at 15 to 50 or more objects per hour. I embrace the challenge of meaningfully, but briefly, appraising objects onsite or online, and when appropriate orally, with research as needed., I will meet yourvaluation needs meaningfully.
I will communicate “substantive matters” relevant to marketability and issues important for the client to properly understand my report and to provide context.
